How to Activate Windows 11 Using a Product Key

This guide walks through the built-in Windows 11 activation flow using the Settings app. It covers how to locate the activation page, open the product key prompt, and complete activation with a valid key.

Activation is handled directly inside Windows 11. The process shown here does not require third-party tools or command-line steps.

How to Activate Windows 11

To activate Windows 11, the process begins on the desktop and moves through the Settings app to the system activation page. From there, a valid product key can be entered and submitted.

1. Open the Settings app from the desktop

Starting from the Windows 11 desktop, open the Settings menu. This is the entry point for accessing Windows activation controls.

2. Go to the System section

Once the Settings window opens, use the left-hand sidebar and select System. This section contains core device and operating system options, including activation.

3. Scroll down to Activation

Inside the System page, scroll down until the Activation option appears. This page shows the current activation state of the device.

If the PC is already activated, the status will indicate that it is active. If activation has not been completed yet, the status will instead show that Windows is inactive.

A valid Windows product key is required to complete this process. The guide only covers where to enter the key inside Windows 11.

4. Open the Change product key option

If Windows is not activated, expand the activation area and choose Change product key. This opens the prompt used to submit the key.

5. Enter the product key

When the product key box appears, enter the Windows key into the field provided. The transcript references a few possible sources for this key, including a downloaded code or the original materials that came with the computer or installation media.

6. Click Next to complete activation

After the product key has been entered, select Next. At that point, Windows proceeds with the activation process and the system becomes active.

Where the Product Key Might Come From

The product key may come from one of several common places:

  • A code that was downloaded separately
  • The packaging or materials from the original Windows purchase
  • The installation disc or related documentation that came with the computer

Quick Summary

  1. Open Settings from the Windows 11 desktop.
  2. Select System from the left-hand menu.
  3. Scroll to Activation.
  4. If Windows is inactive, open Change product key.
  5. Enter the valid product key and click Next.

Before Finishing

This process depends on having a valid Windows product key available. If activation does not proceed successfully, the next step is to verify that the key matches the Windows edition installed on the device and that it was entered correctly.
